Curated by Shaunak Mahbubani, the exhibition builds on the artist’s experience as a member of Thane’s Chendani Koliwada to archive the rich culture of the Kolis alongside networks of kinship between the community and coastal ecosystems.
The Kolis have traditionally passed on their knowledge through oral tradition, which has resulted in them being excluded from the process of documenting their own history. To combat this erasure of their past, the artist creates innovative sculptures that draw on the intricate customs surrounding food, fishing, and faith. Instead of relying on imperial methods of record-keeping like maps and ledgers, the artist utilizes emotional connections to generate a unique form of archiving that aligns with the heritage of his community.
